Tab Tsunami: How to Manage Multiple Browsing Tabs

This is the sign you have been waiting for to clear your browser!

In today’s digital age, a chaotic computer screen with numerous open tabs is common. Whether it’s work, daily news, learning materials, information needed for multiple tasks, or just various email and social media accounts we often find ourselves drowning in too many tabs. The question is: how is this habit affecting our mental health and productivity?

When we’re jumping from tab to tab our brain releases dopamine receptors that are giving us the illusion that we’re being more productive. Our brain, however, is not actually processing all of this information. Rather, it’s frantically jumping from focus point to focus point. We get the false feeling that we’re getting more things done, but it’s not just that.

Keeping multiple tabs open also works as a protection against boredom. Having dozens of tabs open allows us to pretend we’re always doing something, or at least that we always have something available to do.

It may also be driven by a fear of missing information—a kind of “Internet FOMO”.

Paradoxically, all those tabs make us feel like we’re in control; Research has found that humans can’t really efficiently multitask at all—instead, our brains hop rapidly from one task to another, losing full concentration every time we shift our attention.

But, on the other hand, it is inevitable sometimes that we have many tabs opened;

 So let’s see some of the pros and cons of it:

  • Pros – Having multiple tabs open can enhance efficiency and multitasking by allowing quick access to various sources of information and enabling you to work on several projects simultaneously. This setup helps streamline workflows, save time, and keep reference material readily available, making it easier to compare and synthesize data.
  • Cons – However, the downside of too many open tabs includes cognitive overload and decreased computer performance. An overwhelming number of tabs can scatter your focus, increase stress, and reduce productivity, while also slowing down your system and leading to potential crashes. Additionally, the presence of non-work-related tabs can cause distractions, making it difficult to stay on task.

So, how can we manage multiple browsing tabs more effectively and enjoy the benefits without falling victim to the drawbacks? Here are some practical tips:

  • Keep only nine tabs open—at most—at one time. With nine or fewer tabs, you’re able to see everything that’s open at a glance, and you can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate between them. (On a Mac, you can press Command + No. 1 through No. 9 to switch between tabs; on a PC, it’s Control + the number.)
  • Grouping tabs by task or project. That can help you stay organized. Most modern browsers allow you to create tab groups, which can be color-coded and collapsed to reduce clutter.
  • Instead of keeping tabs open indefinitely, bookmark important pages. Organize your bookmarks into folders for easy access and close the tabs once they’re saved.
  • If you need to keep many tabs open for different projects, consider using multiple browser windows or virtual desktops. This approach can help categorize your tasks and reduce visual clutter.
  • If you find yourself distracted by social media or other non-work-related sites, set time limits for these tabs. Some tools can help restrict the amount of time you spend on distracting websites.

While the allure of keeping multiple tabs open is understandable, it’s essential to strike a balance to maintain productivity and mental clarity. By leveraging tab management tools, grouping tabs, and setting time limits, you can enjoy the benefits of having information at your fingertips without the downsides of cognitive overload and decreased computer performance. Remember, a well-organized digital workspace leads to a more focused and efficient workflow. So, get “your cleaning gloves on” and manage those multiple browsing tabs!
